The youth are the future of our industry. As
such, it’s always a great experience to interact with upcoming graduates and
share with them industry experience, but to also get their input in terms of
how they think and react to a range of situations.
As part of our commitment to the industry,
and to helping the next generation (beyond offering internship opportunities),
I recently gave a Guest Lecture at HELP University in Kuala Lumpur. Invited by
the President of IPRMSA (HELP University), I enjoyed leading a two hour session
discussing Crisis Management in the Digital Age. This is a great topic, and
relevant to every brand today, as keyboard warriors and keyboard worriers have
the potential to impact our reputation, and when things do head south, the
power and speed of the internet can whisk away control of the narrative from
the brand (or those managing it) to armchair experts who will have us believe
all the conspiracy theories in the world are coming together to target you,
specifically.
The lecture was a great chance to share a
topic we at Orchan are passionate about – Crisis Management. Farrell and I will
be presenting at an International Conference in December on this very topic, so
this gave us a good chance to share some of our insights and learning curves.
With crisis management, there is no clear-cut right or wrong strategy; but
there is simple, clear, effective best-practice actions that work well in
helping to minimise the effect of a less-than-desirable situation.
We had a great time exploring contemporary
case studies (Wombats, Killing Vegans, Missing Planes, and Odd Pastries), and
sharing our thoughts on how to work under pressure in a crisis situation. For
those keen on what was said, the pdf download link will take you to our
presentation slides.
I was also joined at the end of the session
for a Panel Discussion by three close colleagues: my business partner Farrell
Tan; Social Media Strategist Sue-Lynn Tiong; and Journalist / Editor /
Publisher Deborah Joy Peter. Combined, we took questions from the floor -
mostly from the Faculty Dean, as students were probably nervous to ask us
questions.
We all had a great experience, and hope that
those who attended enjoyed our industry perspective on Crisis Management in the
Digital Age.
