Behind the Scenes: Training Clients in the Art of Public Relations

Image
When it comes to Public Relations, effective communication is key. While it may seem easy to communicate via writing, it requires a lot more than the talent to write. There is a saying that goes “it takes two to tango”. In this context, it takes the skills to write and detailed information for the agency to craft an in depth document for media houses to use. So where do these details come from? Well, the Clients. We can draft “impressive” Press Releases all we want, but without the cooperation of our Clients in terms of being provided details in a timely manner, it’s merely words (text) on paper (PDF file) to media houses. To assist our writing, we often need our Clients to provide us with accurate information in a timely manner – which doesn't always happen; not on time at least. That is why in Orchan Consulting, we offer training opportunities for our Clients. The training does not merely demonstrate why we chase Clients for detailed information, but it helps Clients underst...

Humans of Orchan | Edison (Intern)

Image
Humans of Orchan – Edison Edison is a person who believes that if there’s no hard work in the things you do, success is impossible to be reached in the end. He’s just like any other ordinary guy, who dreams big and aims be on top of the world. But at times, he thinks weakness stands in the way of reaching his goals - time management sometimes poses a great challenge to him, in spite of confidence and his hunger to learn new things every single day where possible. Never thinking of giving up, his principles in life have led him to be the man that he is today – and his journey has just begun as he goes through it and adapts. Here’s a selfie of myself using GoPro Hero camera while riding bicycle with my nephew (not in picture) back in my hometown, Sabah. Hi, there! I’m Edison and I am currently an intern at Orchan Consulting. I love intensive sports especially going to the gym and recently, I got addicted to adventurous activities including open water diving. ...

Humans of Orchan | Christina How

Image
Orchans' Senior PR Executive Christina is a passionate individual who believes every day is a learning process – be it big or small lessons. She is attentive and is always ready to listen to you – be it about work, personal life or for you to vent. Career wise, she is not defined by her job title. She possesses the curiosity of an intern (always keen to learn and is zealous about the “new” experience), has the dedication of an executive and takes ownership of her work almost as much as her superiors do in theirs. Okay. It is weird writing from a third person point of view, especially when you’re writing about yourself.   Thank you, Han Sen, for the photograph! Hello! I’m Christina from Orchan Consulting and I love music and photography among many other things (such as wine, beach, motorsports and travelling). I know, I know – this is not speed dating. But do stay (please, or my boss will blame me for chasing you away). As Ed Sheeran strums his guitar and sin...

Client Close-up: KYOCHON (with Super Junior)

Image
And You Thought You Knew Chicken?   So we say mixing with pop stars is not our thing, but every once-in-a-while a project comes around that one can absolutely not resist. Whether it be finger-licking good (oops, wrong chicken there hahaha), or it just "pops" out at you, that little voice inside your head says "run with it" (no Forrest required; though we do have a Farrell).   Super Junior talking to the crowd   One such opportunity in 2014 was the launch of KyoChon in Malaysia. Not only some tasty chicken (fortunately they paid in cash though), and the chance to launch a franchise, but the opportunity to work with one of Korea's leading K-Pop Groups, SUPER JUNIOR. Truth be told, I'd never heard of them, but the rest of the Orchan team, who are far more musically inspired, certainly had. The news of this broke in the office to ecstatic screams of excitement (not mentioning names Kristy and Christina), which certainly reaffirmed our decision to ...

The Future of Our Industry is in Adapting to Change

Image
Advertising+Marketing recently released a special “Thought Leadership” edition, where industry commentators were invited to explore the future direction of their respective industries, and offer a frank discussion on where industry stands today. Orchan’s Directors, Farrell Tan and Craig J Selby contributed the following discussion on where they see the broader Public Relations Industry in the coming years. Advertising+Marketing Thought Leadership Edition - September 2014   Tomorrow’s Marketing& Communications Landscape, Today! Craig J Selby & Farrell Tan Our Article Just look at how communication is incredibly fluid today. The last decade has seen transformations unparalleled since the discovery of electricity and the telephone, two important advances in technology that revolutionised the world and defined how we work it. Fifteen years ago, the Internet was still relatively new and people did not understand its potential. Marketing 141, a basic mar...

And ... We're Off Again

Welcome to Orchan   Yes, we tried it once, we tried it twice, and now, in celebration of the awesome year that 2015 is and will be, we are back again with the Orchan Blog. OK, so don't go trolling through the archives - we've deleted all the old stuff, making way for fresh content and new insights into what the Orchan team does on a day-to-day basis.   We spend our time strategizing to achieve great coverage for our clients, and so, as practitioners on-the-go, we thought we'd share with you a little about what we do. No, this is not the place for us to "fluff our feathers" and show you all the amazing coverage we get for our charges (we will do that anyway), but to also give you a behind-the-scenes insight into what we get up to in the office, and how we 'terrorise' KL, Penang, the rest of Malaysia (and even Bali) with our antics through that great adventure called 'Public Relations'.   We are a crazy bunch. We joke a lot, tease each o...

Client Up-Close: SVAGO

Image
Refined Dining in the Heart of Kuala Lumpur Something we love almost more than everything else here at Orchan is food. Yes, we are all foodies, and with some of us even writing for food publications when we have the spare time, we certainly understand the Food & Beverage scene in Malaysia well. We love hosting media friends for food reviews. Its not only a great chance to catch up with Editors and Journalists over great food, but time to explore the latest in cuisine options at our clients restaurants, and enjoy a tipple or two along the way. We started the Svago journey in 2012 with a "hard hat party" (yep, that will be a later post), and have been bringing in media and events people ever since. Gaining traction is the best thing, as we see the excitement for a restaurant build up, resulting in more patrons enjoying the venue experience. We thought we'd share a few samplings of how the media reacted to their Svago experience, plus a few of our own picture...
