Media Perspective (Commentary by Aidi Shukor)

Image
Media Perspective (Commentary by Aidi Shukor) They say, seeing is believing. So, that means that we should always believe whatever we see being reported by the mainstream media, right? They are the eyes of the public, no? Not really. The article below by Adam Goldberg of AON News explains how the media can easily deceive us to believing whatever news reported and published by them are the absolute truth. They are not. This is because media outlets don’t publish anything just for fun, they often have an aim or a motive depending on the ones running them. What they do give instead is a perspective which is usually biased to a certain party. For instance, the photos that were posted on Donald Trump’s Inauguration as President of the United States made it seem like many came to cheer for him when in reality, the crowd was way less overwhelming than they portrayed it to be. These days, more and more people turn towards alternative media which like the mainstream one...

Blast from the Past - Miss Malaysia Universe Hall of Fame by Hello! Magazine MUMO: Glamour Through The Ages

Image
The Miss Universe pageant is an annual international tradition for young women around the globe. As millions of fans watch, the pageant features beautiful, young, savvy, and goal-oriented women who come together to shine. Back in 2010, as part of its rebranding of Miss Universe Malaysia, Orchan executed an exclusive media story, “Glamour Through the Ages” in collaboration with Hello! Magazine, where several former MUMO beauty queens were invited to share intimate secrets of their success to wearing the famed tiara. The feature aimed to get people to reflect on the heritage and nostalgia of Miss Universe, and to re-engage older readers in the pageant, as well as to showcase that beauty is eternal. Holding firm to the mission of the Miss Universe pageant which advances and supports opportunities for young women, the story further explored the Miss Universe’s personal journey that have shaped the lives and careers of the ladies. The former contestants spread their message and off...

Humans of Orchan - Joan Bomuhangi

Image
Humans of Orchan – Joan Bomuhangi | AKA, Coconut I’m horrible at introductions, so I’ll just get to it. My name is Joan Bomuhangi (BO-MOO-HAN-GEE) and I am a 20-year-old student at Monash University studying Communications and Media Studies. I’m an Aquarius, if you believe in that sort of thing, and I’m an extroverted person. The very first thing people say about me once they get to know me is that I’m weird, which is true. I have THE BEST sense of humour and I promise, if you’re my friend you’ll spend a great amount of time laughing or cringing - I don’t mind either way. There are few things I love more than food, good company, and my bed. “I only love my bed and my momma” and I’m not sorry. You can be sure that at any given moment , I am either travelling around KL and taking pictures of the scenery, hanging out with friends, or living out my (intangible) childhood dream of being a singer at the nearest karaoke spot. I am Ugandan , but due to my dad’s job in the U...

Blast from the Past - Plaza Damas: Christmas Festivities

Image
As we hum and sing along to Christmas carols like “We wish you a Merry Christmas!” and “Santa Claus is coming to town!”, the malls in town are all set for a spectacular festive celebration during the season of giving. In Malaysia, the tropical rainforest climate only allows us to experience the joyous Christmas vibes as we walk through a sea of Christmas deco in malls. Hartamas Shopping Centre, a popular suburban mall in KL kick-started the festive season in 2012, by especially accommodating its activities to entice participation from kids. What’s a Christmas without a Christmas tree, right? Themed, “Christmas of the Future”, where the kids of Krista Education came together in decorating twenty, seven foot tall trees, each representing the hopes and dreams of the future, where the trees were shared with the orphanages and old folks homes around KL in spreading the Christmas spirit with the needy. Hartamas Shopping Centre’s Charity Bazaar, “Festive Fiesta”, Santa walkabout, Chri...

Learning to be an Influencer | Commentary by Aidi Shukor

Learning to Be an Influencer (Commentary by Aidi Shukor) When I was young, I wanted to become a pilot, so I could travel the world every single day. But back in those days, if children do not want to become a pilot, they would aspire to grow up becoming either a doctor or a teacher. Today, it’s different. As time changed, the ambitions of the new generation also seemed to have changed. I recently asked my 8-year-old cousin what he wants to become when he gets older. His answer, a game reviewer on YouTube. Surprising? Yes. But, consider this, social media stars and influencers are in fact becoming younger and younger these days and while they don’t only have a huge following on their respective social media pages, they also have become successful entrepreneurs. Take Kim Yebin, or more widely known as Baby Yebin for example. The South Korean girl became an internet sensation when she was just three years old and her videos are currently being watched by mil...
