Blast from the Past - Ian Wright

Image
It’s Alright, We’ll Invite Mr Wright I’m lucky in my life to have watched so many British television programmes. Not being British of course means that sometimes, the oddball sense of humour, the dry wit, can simply escape me, but through the wonders of television, tiny people in a little box in our living room, an appreciation has grown of good humour, and an understanding of the British way of doing things. Odd ball is probably the key word, unexpected, random, and seemingly crass and crazy, the British do things differently. It is with that thought that a few weeks ago I headed down to Kuala Lumpur’s The Ship restaurant and theatre stage in Bukit Bintang to see one of Her Majesty’s finest, well, at least, more-well-known entertainers. Having slipped quietly into Malaysia under a shrowd of secrecy (yes, I did know about it), and under strict instructions not to tell the media, for fear of Barry Manilow recordings being played over and over in my office, I kept my enthusiasm v...

Blast from the Past - Five27 & Chef Nizar Achmad

Image
We were part of Penang history when Nordic cuisine got itself acquainted with the islanders’ palate. The restaurant was Five27 – a bistro lounge that offered gastronomical dishes from Northern Europe. Five27 engaged us to help them launch their new bar concept, to which we held an unofficial launch party to introduce the food to the media. Headed by Chef Nizar Achmad – an Indonesian Chef who has an extensive array of culinary experience up his sleeve (14 years in Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia), and who had defined his culinary style as “New Nordic Cuisine”; Five27 was the first New Nordic concept restaurant to be opened not only in Penang, but in Malaysia. The name Five27 is no mystery, and there’s nothing Nordic about it. The name was in fact based on the latitude that crosses the restaurant’s exact location – 5°27’27”N. Alongside promoting the restaurant, we also represented Chef Nizar, and helped him build his profile. Nizar has cooked for stars, royalty,...

Blast from the Past - 42East

Image
Back in 2011, 42East engaged Orchan to launch, promote, and support the growth and development of the establishment. Located in the north part of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, the venue offered a contemporary bistro environment that serves up hearty food. With a strong reputation for pork ribs, the bar took pride in offering their signature stout glazed pork ribs, along with frozen margaritas. We led 42East in putting their name on a map dotted with a number of competing bars, situated along the busy row they were located. They had their signature ribs to be put in the spotlight, hence, we kick-started the PR initiative by having food reviews with a number of media and key opinion leaders (KOLs). Positive feedback stemmed from the reviews, and we were able to get some great coverage. Apart from food reviews, we also helped in creating several marketing and promotional initiatives. For example, on St Patrick’s Day, we put forward their Wasabi Ribs (along with Irish food platter and Car...

K-Food Fair 2016 @ One Utama Shopping Centre: Kore-introduction of Korean Foods

Image
Kimchi ! Bibimbap ! Annyeo - “Your designated monthly Korean quota has expired as of 10:49am . To continue further usage of Korean phrases for any purposes,  either professional or random, please top-up at the following kiosks: …” Well, okay. I’m not quite surfing on the Hallyu wave, despite the constant growth it has been having in the Malaysian market. Still, I wouldn’t say that I was disinterested – I was definitely up for the challenge, seeing as it wasn’t purely a promotional stunt for a K-pop group or a specific brand of gochujang (Korean red chilli paste – yes, I topped up). Being significantly Muslim-populated, the Malaysian market has a high demand for halal food and beverage (F&B) products. Korean companies interested in penetrating the Malaysian market have also identified the importance of securing Malaysian halal certification.  Hence, we were approached to spread the news about a Consumer Experience Event on 27 August 2016, whereby aspiring Ko...

Behind-the-Scenes: Baba baa | Exclusive Interviews

Rasa Sayang Sing-and-Record Fun Book Over the past month or so, Orchan has been supporting an intriguing and very relevant project – a children’s book. Not your usual children’s story book, but a curated resource of traditional Malaysian folksongs for our youngest generation to learn. Given Malaysia’s multi-ethnic populace, and the immense inter-twining of cultural heritage over the centuries, a resource such as this for young children is a blessing – an opportunity to learn songs that our own parents and grandparents would have sung as children. Strangely enough, although lots of similar resources for children can be found in English, Chinese, and other major international languages, no such opportunities exist in Malay. Our client decided to change this – initially for her own son to learn more about her Peranakan heritage, but also for other Malaysians to have exposure to these classics from childhood, and to provide a working, interactive resource for children to learn, as...

Thought Leadership - Business Cards Matter More than Ever

Image
As ‘old school’ as these are, they won’t be replaced by digital forms any time soon. Business cards remain as relevant as ever because: 1.     Swapping contact information digitally is impersonal. 2.     They are the most effective direct marketing tools. 3.     A business card is the first impression of your brand. 4.     Creative business cards get shared – continuing to market for you. 5.     Business cards show you are prepared. Source: Entrepreneur.com Expanding on the fourth point, creatively designed business cards are often successful in catching someone’s eye, and they can leave a good impression of you and your company. What’s more, recipients would most likely be interested to simply network with you. It acts as bait for opportunities really, and that is the true purpose of cards – functional marketing. Just take a look at the following twenty (20) interesting, funny, and memor...
