Kimchi ! Bibimbap ! Annyeo - “Your designated monthly Korean quota has expired as of 10:49am . To continue further usage of Korean phrases for any purposes,  either professional or random, please top-up at the following kiosks: …” Well, okay. I’m not quite surfing on the Hallyu wave, despite the constant growth it has been having in the Malaysian market. Still, I wouldn’t say that I was disinterested – I was definitely up for the challenge, seeing as it wasn’t purely a promotional stunt for a K-pop group or a specific brand of gochujang (Korean red chilli paste – yes, I topped up). Being significantly Muslim-populated, the Malaysian market has a high demand for halal food and beverage (F&B) products. Korean companies interested in penetrating the Malaysian market have also identified the importance of securing Malaysian halal certification.  Hence, we were approached to spread the news about a Consumer Experience Event on 27 August 2016, whereby aspiring Ko...

Rasa Sayang Sing-and-Record Fun Book Over the past month or so, Orchan has been supporting an intriguing and very relevant project – a children’s book. Not your usual children’s story book, but a curated resource of traditional Malaysian folksongs for our youngest generation to learn. Given Malaysia’s multi-ethnic populace, and the immense inter-twining of cultural heritage over the centuries, a resource such as this for young children is a blessing – an opportunity to learn songs that our own parents and grandparents would have sung as children. Strangely enough, although lots of similar resources for children can be found in English, Chinese, and other major international languages, no such opportunities exist in Malay. Our client decided to change this – initially for her own son to learn more about her Peranakan heritage, but also for other Malaysians to have exposure to these classics from childhood, and to provide a working, interactive resource for children to learn, as...

Thought Leadership - Business Cards Matter More than Ever

Image
As ‘old school’ as these are, they won’t be replaced by digital forms any time soon. Business cards remain as relevant as ever because: 1.     Swapping contact information digitally is impersonal. 2.     They are the most effective direct marketing tools. 3.     A business card is the first impression of your brand. 4.     Creative business cards get shared – continuing to market for you. 5.     Business cards show you are prepared. Source: Entrepreneur.com Expanding on the fourth point, creatively designed business cards are often successful in catching someone’s eye, and they can leave a good impression of you and your company. What’s more, recipients would most likely be interested to simply network with you. It acts as bait for opportunities really, and that is the true purpose of cards – functional marketing. Just take a look at the following twenty (20) interesting, funny, and memor...

Thought Leadership - Branding for Social Impact

Now what does this yellow rectangle remind you of? Is it a picture of animals roaming through the wilderness of the Serengeti? Or a postcard-worthy view of mighty Mount Everest? Or portraits of aboriginals of Australia? Source - www.nationalgeographic.com In my mind, this rectangle would conjure an image of the ‘Afghan Girl’, mainly because I have read a few articles about how this picture came about to be one of the most celebrated portraits of our time; one of the few lightly likened to the Mona Lisa in terms of the emotions they subtly convey. I know for a fact that this portrait was featured in a magazine that bears the yellow rectangle as its logo – National Geographic. Afghan Girl | Source - upload.wikimedia.org It’s fair to say that most people tend to remember images better than words. It’s just how our brains seem to work; visual over verbal. For those of us who are familiar with National Geographic, the associations we make (safari, Africa, the Himalayas) wit...

Blast from the Past - Malaysian Insider - Thought Dinners

Image
As a way to enhance their effectiveness and reach, as well as to position themselves as the top alternative news medium in the country, The Malaysian Insider (TMI) used an unconventional approach to draw closer to their readers and followers. Being non-conforming in the way they tell their news, the online news portal hosted a series of gatherings they called Thought Leadership dinners. These gatherings were a platform for them to engage people in civil society discussion as well as to initiate a debate about contemporary issues among people with different perspectives. In line with their commitment to freedom of expression / speech, the sessions were considered a success among those who attended. The first round of the series witnessed TMI’s entertaining columnist Art Harun talking to the crowd about issues of interest at the time. It was a good old debate session with a slightly tense aura in the room; different people convincing their interpretations of all sorts of issue. ...
