So, the selfie has been taunting us for the past few years – but regardless of our personal opinion of the phenomena, it is fascinating to see just how embedded into our popular culture it has become. We have seen the typical selfie, the wefie, but today we witnessed a new extension of the selfie – this time, at an important political and media event.
No, it wasn’t the audience turning its back on Hilary (although, some of us would certainly understand the attraction of that), it was an orchestrated media-savvy move for the second Clinton to show that she is “in touch” with the younger generation. Note the appropriately positioned raised platform for her to stand on (and not the stage that she was speaking from either!), the crowd-readiness with their selfie sticks, and the overwhelming enthusiasm of the entire crowd as they each get a chance to ‘selfie with Hilary’ in this unique opportunity. Clearly staged, but rightly so, and executed brilliantly. It’s all about crafting that connection, and showing an understanding of ones audience. Hilary did good today!

Selfies are now more than a fad – they are a wave of popular behavior which is fast becoming the norm in so many circumstances. Forget kissing babies, let’s ‘group selfie presidential candidates’ in especially-crafted selfie opportunities instead. It was good to note that Hilary did offer other photo opportunities (including individual selfies) with members of the audience afterwards, but we do have to give kudos to Ms Clinton’s team for taking the ordinary selfie and turning it into such a great media opportunity (and the endless meme’s that will now be created). Now that’s damn good PR!

Anyway, take a look at the following article from the New Zealand Herald which captured the story (no cats stuck up trees today, so they needed a filler story) to see further commentary on the issue.
