In the hunt for the
new Miss Universe Malaysia 2010, castings were held for single ladies between
the ages of 18 and 26 years old. Ladies were encouraged to dress to impress, and
if you had any skills or talent, bring along the necessary materials to perform
for and dazzle the judges.
Roadshows were held in various Malaysian cities. On one occasion, the entire
MUMO Team, including Orchan, headed to Penang - searching for beauty. One
quirky story from Penang - we all went out on the hunt for attractive ladies -
armed with fliers and audition details. One of the MUMO team approached a
stunning young lady - offered her praise and encouraged her to join the
audition - only to be spoken back to in a deep man’s voice - not quite post-op
transsexual. Our MUMO team left the scene, quite red faced, but certainly had
something to laugh about over drinks later.
Although in Penang it was soon discovered
that the girls were quite shy; with only four turned up for the casting. Despite
the low number, one of the four ladies, Laureen Quah bowled the judges over
with her pleasant personality high, spirits and eloquence, and subsequently
made it through to the next round.
In order to
increase the amount of participants for the auditions, Orchan together with MUMO
did quite a lot of pre-publicity. This included rebranding the pageant,
highlighting its new direction and personalities, and making the Miss
University pageant in Malaysia more approachable and friendly.
