Missing the Target in a Crisis (Commentary by Jordan Low)

Image
Missing the Target in a Crisis (Commentary by Jordan Low) Target is one of the largest and most recognisable retail corporation in the United States. When a crisis occurs that involves such a well-established company, many will be affected and the company will be expected to handle the situation promptly and effectively. In 2013, Target faced such a crisis when the company suffered a massive data breach. Customer credit card information was compromised and millions were affected. Target made a decent effort in managing the issue at hand, however they also made several huge blunders in the process that overall hurt their image more than salvaging it. Target’s response to the data leak was relatively fast. However, in their haste to put out a statement, Target’s spokesperson did not adequately consult with upper management, leading to misinformation that required a retraction. This shows that Target may have had a crisis management plan in place, but it was eithe...

BOEING 737 MAX 8 Crisis (Commentary by Dara Precious Asiimwe)

Image
BOEING 737 MAX 8 Crisis (Commentary by Dara Precious Asiimwe) For over half a century, airplanes have been the ultimate means of travel, making it easier to travel long distances. An airplane is a delicate type of transport involving travelling in air, but it surprisingly only takes about nine (9) days to manufacture one. However, like all great creations, there are some downsides if there is the slightest error. On 10 March 2019, an Ethiopian airplane, crashed on its way to Nairobi, leading to the death of 137 people just six (6) minutes after take-off. Prior to that, on 29 October 2019, a Lion Air flight crashed into the Java sea killing 189 people, twelve (12) minutes after take-off. These tragedies happened on different occasions but are linked to the same type of plane, the Boeing 737 Max 8. Both planes were new and manufactured by Boeing.  Apart from the black box recovered from the Lion Air flight which pointed out possibility of a manufacturing problem, there...

World Poetry Day

Image
So, it’s World Poetry Day! We found a few interesting haikus (an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five syllables respectively) on how it’s like in a PR agency. Let us know if you relate!

Orchan Wants You!

Image
Orchan Wants You!  Are you up for a challenge?  A challenge of thriving on challenges; a challenge of persuasive communication; a challenge of facing rejection; a challenge of pushing your creative stimulation to your fullest potential; a challenge of story-telling, with the benefits of being able to come into the office in T-shirt and jeans and be working with family (a dysfunctional family, but still, a family), which also means you don’t have to go through five (5) levels of hierarchy to get approval for your work.  Don’t get us wrong; we always remain professional when we’re with clients, showing our best attitude and our brightest smile, while getting our work done with flying colours. However, when we’re amongst ourselves, we’re equal, casual, and always having fun. We’re not afraid to make fun of each other (even our bosses!) and tease our colleagues 24/7, but we know we are always there to help each other out. But, if you can’t accept tough love a...

Why So Furious? (Commentary by Johnathen Tan)

Image
Why So Furious? (Commentary by Johnathen Tan) Over the past fortnight, as I was scrolling through my social media feed, I can’t help but to come across viral news about people lashing out at staff who were deemed disrespectful or hostile. From a luxury fashion retail outlet at Kuala Lumpur’s finest, to a supposed government agency in Kelana Jaya – we would have a certain level of expectation from the service given to us, right? Right? Fine, who am I kidding? These things don’t come off as anything that would be surprising to us Malaysians. It’s not something that we haven’t experienced ourselves. It’s just that most of us are able to suppress our emotions when we are faced with cynicism from difficult people in our daily lives. To put it in context, I discovered two occurrences to be somewhat similar. A man saw red and lost his temper when he had to wait four (4) hours, after making repeated trips, to be served at a government agency due to “lack of manpower and staff b...

And the Fake News Award Goes to... (Commentary by Terence Tee)

Image
And the Fake News Award Goes to… (Commentary by Terence Tee) “Fake news!” We are more than familiar with these two words, especially over the past few years. Although fake news has always been a serious issue in the digital era, it has never gained much attention – until recently. Its rise in awareness is partly attributed to the leader of the free world during his 2016 presidential race. The study that follows this commentary, analyses Facebook posts of nearly 1,200 Facebook users after the 2016 United States Presidential Election. It was found that people over the age of sixty-five (65), especially conservatives, are seven (7) times more likely to share fake news than users of another demographic. Personally, I believe the main reason of this is because there is a lack of digital media literacy. When people of the older generation scroll around the social media site, they are less likely to fact-check anything before sharing posts. Facebook, it can be hard to tell where ...

Flying Cars? Or Flying Off Topic? (Commentary by Ellie Ho)

Image
Flying Cars? Or Flying Topic? (Commentary by Ellie Ho) “This year is a realistic target because we have the technology. It is all about the speed of implementation,” said the Minister of Entrepreneur Development. I’m sure whoever has been following the news of flying cars is aware of the quote stated above; the emergence of flying cars in Malaysia, emergence of bigger backlash from the public. One commentator went as far as saying “Words fail me. I have never read so much stupidity in my life.” Memes went on to be produced as people started putting toll plazas in the sky to charge the flying cars. Hilarious right? Now let me ask you this, where did this Minister state this opinion? If ‘I don’t know’ is your answer, you’ve reiterated my point on my behalf. The Minister was meant to mention flying cars as a casual remark, stating that it is in the plans of the government, but it was blown out of proportion, and made headlines in newspapers instead of the actual eve...

Swedish Girl’s Video Goes Viral (Commentary by Dara Precious Asiimwe)

Image
Swedish Girl’s Video Goes Viral (Commentary by Dara Precious Asiimwe) In today’s world, the young generation is having their voice heard loud and clear to justify their political views through internet platforms. Teenagers and young adults have proven that no one is too young to create change, whether the situation is big or small. Trying to do something right is never wrong, but going against the law brings consequences. As much as we have had the privilege to use internet to fight our battles, we forget we are not invisible to the law. Eli Ersson was heroic for stepping in and preventing deportation for a convicted man last July, broadcast her attempt to prevent a Turkish Airlines flight from leaving Göteborg Landvetter Airport live on Facebook. Her timing wasn’t right but at least it created awareness for asylum seekers in Sweden. At the same time her actions had consequences. Her live video went instantly viral and was viewed widely. Internet platforms have prov...
