Blast From the Past - A Tsar is Born!

Image
Inspired by the brand creators’ passion for travel, adventure and glamourous lifestyle, Tsar Asia was a home-grown brand with a ‘subtly eccentric’ range of shoes and bags, which promises functionality and individuality for au courant , sophisticated women on-the-go. Bored of all things common, the once-upon-a-time avid shopaholic turned designer decided to turn her creativity into making shoes and handbags. The bags and shoes were custom-made and limited in units meaning that if you buy a pair of shoes or acquire a handbag from Tsar, you are probably one of only a few people in the world to own the item. Personal, unique and subtly eccentric, Tsar aimed to scour the globe to find fabrics, trinkets and inspiration injecting a little bit of the world into your wardrobe. Due to the fact that the products are not mass produced, the designer takes her time going through the creative process. Orchan was involved with developing their branding and also launching Tsa...

Flustered by an Egg? (Commentary by Joan Bomuhangi)

Flustered by an Egg? (Commentary by Joan Bomuhangi) What is it about this generation and its obsession with trolling? Because that’s what this is. The ultimate form of trolling. Posting a simple picture of an egg with the specific goal of dethroning Kylie Jenner as the person with the most liked Instagram post. It’s a stupid waste of time, yet over 50 million people - yes 50 MILLION PEOPLE - have like a simple picture of an egg. I also succumbed to the temptation and dashed over Instagram to like the post the minute I found out about it. See, that’s the thing about my generation, we love to take the piss out of any situation. It always baffled my parents and my older sibling how my brother and I spoke to each other. You see my sisters are significantly older than my brother and I (we’re twins). So, despite being siblings, we are technically part of two different generations, and thus we have different ways of behaving. My brother and I, like most people our age, t...

Blast From the Past - 42East

Image
Back in 2011, 42East engaged Orchan to launch, promote, and support the growth and development of the establishment. Located in the north part of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, the venue offered a contemporary bistro environment that serves up hearty food. With a strong reputation for pork ribs, the bar took pride in offering their signature stout glazed pork ribs, along with frozen margaritas. We led 42East in putting their name on a map dotted with a number of competing bars, situated along the busy row they were located. They had their signature ribs to be put in the spotlight, hence, we kick-started the PR initiative by having food reviews with a number of media and key opinion leaders (KOLs). Positive feedback stemmed from the reviews, and we were able to get some great coverage. Apart from food reviews, we also helped in creating several marketing and promotional initiatives. For example, on St Patrick’s Day, we put forward their Wasabi Ribs (along with Irish food pla...

The Streisand Effect (Commentary by Jordan Low)

Image
The Streisand Effect (Commentary by Jordan Low) Censorship is becoming one of the most loathed “dirty words” in the age of digital media. There are companies that view censorship as a quick fix to negative press that might be inconveniencing them. These companies believe that once they silence the source of negative press, the problem will go away. However, they severely underestimate the human hunger for information. The Streisand Effect is the name of one such phenomenon; whereby attempts to censor or hide information will inadvertently draw far more attention to the issue, usually facilitated by the internet. Jonathan Becher explains that the origin of the term stems from a lawsuit in 2003. Celebrity singer Barbra Streisand sued photographer Kenneth Adelman for including an aerial photograph of her Malibu home. The photo was one of thousands he took of the California coastline for researchers to use to study erosion. Streisand claimed that the photos w...

Searching Beyond Google (Commentary by Aidi Shukor)

Image
Searching Beyond Google (Commentary by Aidi Shukor) I remember the first time I discovered Google, and that was when I was just 10 years old. It was a truly fascinating experience knowing that you could make images appear just by typing out a word or two. Fast forward to 2019, Google is now seen as the answer to all our questions and uncertainties (it literally is, I admit, at least for me as a university student). It finds restaurants for you, it shows you the latest news, and even translates things for you! And now with Google Assistant which is powered by AI, the possibilities are endless. As we continue to rely heavily on Google, little did we realise that as we search, it decides everything for us rather than the other way around. It is true, Google gives us the search results that it wants us to see and, in some cases, results that would benefit the company the most which brought to European Union’s accusations on its violation of antitrust law back i...

Who Buys Fake News? (Commentary by Aidi Shukor)

Image
Who Buys Fake News? (Commentary by Aidi Shukor) I remember a time when my grandmother shared to everyone on WhatsApp (yes, she can use WhatsApp) that there was a UFO that landed in a paddy field in Kedah. Everyone in my family could tell that the video she shared was fake, because it was so badly edited, and, are UFOs even real in the first place? But, like any other passionate grandmother, she insisted that the video was a hundred percent real. Then, I thought, how many more people in this world are there who are just like my grandmother, in the aspect of believing all the news shared on social media is legitimate? Well, instead of trying to answer that question, we should actually be asking, “why is fake news so easily believed and shared by people?”. In a Malaysian context, it comes on a daily basis, and the people “buying” fake news today is increasing when it’s not supposed too! Even teachers fall victim to such news. For businesses, this is something they...
