Have You Heard of Toothsome? (Commentary by Craig J Selby)

Have You Heard of Toothsome? Commentary by Craig J Selby Food writing is a hobby. I have a big belly, and I like it to be full, especially with delicacies from some of the latest restaurants to don our landscape with their offerings. But, the challenge is not in writing a fair, balanced review for both restaurant and cuisine, but it is discerning the right words to use to paint a picture of deliciousness – before our readers get the chance to decide whether we know our stuff or not. My Editor @TheYumList (shout out to Monica) recently shared this tongue-in-cheek article with the team – food words banned from a leading Australian food review. Perhaps she was hinting at something for us all, or perhaps just sharing what is really a good article about the state of language use? Either way, it is a good read – on words that one should not use when writing food. So, before you post that next Instagram-able plate, think carefully about your choice of descriptors! Pictu...

Blast From the Past: Timberland Watches

Image
Fashion Meets Mother Nature as Timberland Reveals its Blossoming Watch Collection Decked with celebrities and the charming emcee Rex Musadek from LiteFM, crowd amassed inside the Velvet Room of Zouk Club KL for the unveiling of Timberland watches in Malaysia. The event entertained guests with a fashion show and shed light on the distinguishing features of each watch range. On top of that, free watches were given away and guests stood a chance of winning additional Timberland products during Q&A sessions and a lucky draw. Needless to say, it was an early –  really  early – festive season. A couple of our favourites Our Emcee for the evening Famous for their indomitable waterproof boots, Timberland now unleashes a myriad of watches that were designed for the outdoors. All of its watches are equipped with stainless steel cawes while lenses are of mineral glass coated with sapphire. In addition, many of Timberland’s watches are assembled using sustainable materia...

Blast from the Past - PTCM

Image
Even a minute can make a huge difference. That’s what most people would agree on when it comes to tragic situations or emergencies. Time becomes a luxury during such events, and these situations call for immediate action not exclusively from the first responders, but the civilians in near proximity. Having someone to be well-equipped with the right knowledge and skills to handle crisis the moment it strikes, and before responders arrive, would mean a difference between minor and major damage, controlled and chaotic situations, and between lives saved and lives lost. Albeit having the right mind-set and good attention, a lot of people have no idea how to react during a disaster. The Emergency Action Force of Malaysia (PTCM), a community volunteer organisation, didn’t want to  pay no heed  to this problem. As a way to fully utilise the buffer time during a crisis, the organisation provides a series of emergency response training sessions for the willing members of th...

Coaching isn’t Sophisticated Telling | Commentary by Christeen Akkarawatte

Image
Coaching isn’t Sophisticated Telling | Commentary by Christeen Akkarawatte When someone asks us for help, do we just give them directions, or do we help them solve the problem? Or, is it that considered the same? It gets you to wonder whether you’re actually coaching the person or just laying out the answers. Coaching helps shape our colleagues’ mind, get them to think from a different perspective and have them come into their own conclusion. Solutions are not always black and white, one would need to put some thought into it and when someone asks for help, guiding them doesn’t necessarily mean answers should be given out. Hence, the title. Coaching is an opportunity for one to put forth some new insights and experience into the picture – not really a sophisticated way of answering a question. My thoughts on this idea of coaching came about after reading Margie Hartley’s article. She encourages her readers to take a step...

Are You A Dirty Consultant?

Image
Are you a Dirty Consultant? She was. When she was the consultant two decades ago, she refused to advise until she knew what she was advising on. She would do a night with the night-shift, spend a day with the truckers, work the warehouse, visit different branches and speak to white and blue collar workers about their experiences. She never assumed she could make a good call without knowing how it would impact jobs across the company. But she couldn’t do it anymore. The consultants the company now employs don’t do that. They are suited and booted, equipped with shiny laptops and digital tools, promising high-tech solutions for all her woes. But never, ever, doing the dirty work of finding out what was going on in the messy organisational reality. Instead, they produced engagement platforms, driven by cutting-edge technologies running on pumped up algorithms aimed at discovering who was disengaged and providing real-time data on what they were doing and how they were...
