The Write Stuff

Image
We recently came across an article that highlights on what’s happening on the other side of the fence in the PR industry. John Lim, a Malaysian journalist whom we came to know from our past contacts, was brain-picked by NST on his perspective on the media life. We think it is always good to be in the know about how the people from the other side work, as it provides us with a clearer picture on how to effectively approach them as PR practitioners. Have a read of the article below. John Lim, the editor for AskMen Southeast Asia (the regional edition of AskMen), began his journalism career dealing in both print and web, had a stint in a print environment for several years and now works in a fully web-based publication.                            A graduate of Environmental Management at Monash University, Lim realised halfway through his study that he ...

Five (5) Tales of Brands Using Their Heritage to Tell Stories

Image
In a world that is barraged with content, increasing number of organisations have begun using stories to sell products and services, and to shape public perception. Despite this positive realisation, many of the stories these organisations decide to tell are often superficial or inauthentic. The most powerful story of all – one that is compelling, authentic and true – is rooted in one’s own experience. Smart organisations and their leaders know this, and act deliberately to capture “heritage stories” – founding myths, remembered events or survival stories. They use these resources to help crystallise a sense of purpose, engage people in transformational change, and make them feel a part of something larger than themselves. For truly compelling stories, organisations should look to their own heritage, and here are five (5) examples of those who did just that. KPMG – Instil a sense of mission and purpose In facing a growing, increasingly disconnected global workforce, the ac...

Blogger of the Month - Caroline May Ling

Image
February introduces Caroline May Ling, a perky young blogger who is passionate about sharing her life stories; which mainly encompass food, travel, beauty, and fashion, with her readers. 1. How did you first get into blogging? Did the idea came out of the blue, or did it come after a thoughtful consideration? Was there a blogger who inspired you to start your blog? Thanks to my primary 6 school teacher, I learned how to write a diary and I used have one for every year until I found out that my family member secretly read it. And then, thanks to best friend when I was form 3, I discover a thing they call “blog”. Some of my friends were on xanga and then moved to blogspot which is now renamed to Blogger. 2. How can you describe your blogging style with regards to your content? My blog is a lifestyle blog and I write about all things including personal stuff, travel, food, fashion, beauty, etc. I think blogging style is quite subjective, for example, I personally know my ...

Creating Something from Nothing: Then He Said, "Let There Be Content"

Image
As an amateur to the industry, I had to ensure that my commentary on the industry through my blogposts on change management, crisis management, and public relations carried weight. They had to relate to newcomers (such as myself), but not to the extent of being entry-level, and dissuade initiated readers (such as Craig). It was a tough hurdle to overcome, but no one said anything about having to jump over it! This was an excellent opportunity for me to be learned about the industry and wrestle with the unfamiliarity, as well as to develop a platform to express my viewpoints.   Fortunately, there was plenty of help to be found online! I needed to have an understanding on what the industry represented, and hence I tagged (kudos if you get the reference) any articles which I found were interesting, and I could develop in my own language. The ideas from their literature were blitzed with my thoughts of the article, as well as those from other reading materials – the (near) perfect...
