Thought Leadership - Is Digital a Fad?

Define fad. Something short-lived – people get all excited – then – FLOP! Think Telletubbies – whose meteoric climb to fame lasted what, three weeks, four days and twenty seven minutes; before the plug was pulled on future development. OK, maybe a little longer, and yes, they did survive, but they didn’t generate, or command, the audience expected of them. FLOP, fad alert! So, to re-ask the question, is digital a fad? Perhaps. Now, why do I say this? Actually, a multitude of reasons – but lets break it down to two core observable trends: (1) monetisation of social media; and (2) artisanisation of millennials. Unrelated for sure, but both trends could contribute to the long-term decline in digital, and the re-emergence of traditional publication and public relations options. The Miss Universe pageant is an annual international tradition for young women around the globe. As millions of fans watch, the pageant features beautiful, young, savvy, and goal-oriented women who come together to shine. Back in 2010, as part of its rebranding of Miss Universe Malaysia, Orchan executed an exclusive media story, “Glamour Through the Ages” in collaboration with Hello! Magazine, where several former MUMO beauty queens were invited to share intimate secrets of their success to wearing the famed tiara. The feature aimed to get people to reflect on the heritage and nostalgia of Miss Universe, and to re-engage older readers in the pageant, as well as to showcase that beauty is eternal. Holding firm to the mission of the Miss Universe pageant which advances and supports opportunities for young women, the story further explored the Miss Universe’s personal journey that have shaped the lives and careers of the ladies.
