When Quick Response (QR) Code technology became
popular among businesses a few years back, companies everywhere embraced the
technology as a way to further enhance their business operations. It was a big
of a deal for a lot of them. Some use it as a tool in commercial tracking
applications while some incorporate it into in their marketing, advertising,
and promotion initiatives.
Yappy.tv, an online Chinese news and
lifestyle portal in Malaysia (now closed), didn’t turn a blind eye to this
technology. As a way to reach new heights, the media vehicle included it as one
of their initiatives to help businesses and advertisers to reach target
demographics.
QR Code makes it easy for customers to access
advertisements using their smart phones. It allows a number of advantages such
as driving the customer to the brand / product website, providing e-voucher for
promotional offer, displaying short videos and even including GPS coordinates
or map so that customers can go to the point of sale.
At that time, QR Code was no longer the
boring black and white pixelated dots. Companies were able to have their
coloured brand logos embedded within code. This was a great way to build brand
recognition, and Yappy.tv was proud to offer such an advantageous technology to
its clients.
Yappy.tv was a partner organisation for Orchan;
Orchan would help in terms of content and special projects while Yappy.tv would
provide event and support for Orchan as and when needed.
The effort of promoting the portal’s usage of
QR Code was jointly supported by Orchan. It was a pretty interesting
undertaking as Orchan was able to secure a television interview with RTM 2; a
great example of traditional media shining light on new media.
